How Often Should You Clean a Block-Paved Driveway in London?

Block paving is one of the most popular driveway surfaces in the UK, and for good reason — it's durable, looks good, and can be repaired panel by panel if damaged. But it's also porous, which means it absorbs dirt, algae and organic staining faster than solid concrete or tarmac. If you're wondering why your driveway looks tired again just months after having it cleaned, the short answer is: that's normal, and it's about frequency, not failure.

The general rule of thumb

Most block-paved driveways in London benefit from a full clean every 12–18 months, with lighter maintenance in between. Properties in shaded areas, near trees, or backing onto green space tend to need attention closer to the 12-month mark, since damp, shaded conditions accelerate moss and algae growth. South-facing, more exposed driveways can often stretch closer to 18–24 months between full cleans.

What actually causes the buildup

Three things drive most of the staining we see on London driveways: organic growth (moss, algae, lichen) that thrives in the UK's damp climate, general dirt and tyre residue from daily use, and oil or fuel staining from parked vehicles. Left untreated, organic growth in particular doesn't just look bad — it becomes genuinely slippery, which is a real safety concern on a sloped driveway or a path used daily.

Signs it's time for a clean, regardless of the calendar

  • Green or black staining between the block joints
  • Visible moss, especially in corners or shaded edges
  • The paving feels slightly slippery when wet
  • Weeds pushing up between the blocks (a sign the joint sand has washed out or broken down, which cleaning and re-sanding addresses together)

Why re-sanding matters as much as the clean itself

A pressure wash alone can actually make weed growth worse if the joint sand isn't replaced afterwards — you're left with empty joints that fill with windblown seed and soil. That's why a proper block paving job includes re-sanding with a jointing compound, not just a rinse.
